SLT Chairman P. G. Kumarasingha Sirisena and SLT Group CEO Dileepa Wijesundera felicitate winners of Mercantile Athletic Championship 2015 at BMICH and the SLT team
For the second consecutive year, Sri Lanka Telecom, the national ICT solutions provider in the country emerged victorious at the 32nd Annual Mercantile Athletic Championship 2015 held at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium in Diyagama on 22/23 August 2015.
The company succeeded in gaining an impressive, unmatched score of 418 points, having competed against over 1,500 athletes from 48 large private sector companies including MAS Group, Sri Lankan Airlines, John Keells and all private banks. The second and third places were secured by Sampath Bank and SriLankan Airlines with a total of 235 points and 166 points respectively.
SLT succeeded in winning five titles: Overall Winner of the Mercantile Athletic Championships 2015, Overall Champions – Women, Overall Champions – Men, Overall Masters Champions – Women and Overall Masters Champions – Men. The company succeeded in winning a total of 139 medals including 45 Gold Medals, 43 Silver medals and 51 Bronze medals, bring pride and honour to the company once again.
Apart from the above, individual performances by SLT staff were specially recognised where K.P. Priyangani received the award for the Best Athlete in the over 45 women’s category and D.M.I. Karunarathne bagged the award for the Best Athlete in the over 50 women’s category.
The officials who graced the felicitation ceremony were SLT Chairman P. G. Kumarasingha Sirisena, SLT Group CEO Dileepa Wijesundera, Mercantile Athletic Federation (MAF) President Sydney Rathnayaka, MAF Secretary Tornado Jayasundara, MAF Former President K. Sachithrananda and Judge and Technical Officer Mallika Sachithrananda. Former national athletes Sugath Thilakaratne Jayamilni Ileperuma, Dhammika Menike and Susanthika Jayasinghe were also present.
Expressing his sentiments over the SLT team’s performance, Sirisena said that Sri Lanka Telecom is very proud of being able to win for the second consecutive year whilst competing against talented athletes from across the island.
“Our athletes have worked hard to enhance their skills year after year. The competition has grown stronger each year, so have our athletes. We are very proud of their achievement and we hope to encourage and motivate them further to strengthen their skills even more in the coming years.”
“SLT has a long term plan to develop sports in Sri Lanka, especially the development of athletics,” said Group CEO Dileepa Wijesundera. “We are proud of the continued performance of our athletes which has shown much improvement year after year. We provide opportunities for athletes at SLT as well as other local athletes to continuously enhance their skills to ensure that Sri Lankan athletics reach the highest standards on par with global standards.”
