Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT), the national telecommunication service provider was proud to join in the Olympic celebrations with the rest of the country, by providing its unanimous support in the role of Principal Sponsor for the Olympic Day Run held on 27 June. The Olympic Day Run 2012 which took place at the Independence Square in Colombo saw the participation of nearly 1000 students from 17 schools in the Colombo Municipal Area. The chief guest for the event was the Deputy Sports Minister Dilan Perera.
Commenting on the significance of the Olympic Day Run and the role played by SLT, the SLT Chief Corporate Officer Lal Ranjith, addressing the gathering at the event said, “Being in the business of ‘connecting’ people, SLT is very passionate about connecting people in Sri Lanka and the world together. Sports, and more importantly, the Olympic games, play a very important role in community in bringing people together, across social boundaries, helping to foster cultural exchange. I believe this is a very important aspect of the Olympics and the Olympic Day Run, which encourages unity and fellowship and helps people to experience for themselves the Olympic values. So we truly appreciate this aspect of the Olympic Day Run and consider it a privilege to be able to provide our support for an international sporting event of this calibre.”
This is the fifth consecutive year in which SLT is partnering the National Olympic Committee (NOC) to provide support for their Olympic Day Run. SLT also donated valuable books on the subject of sports to the participating schools as a reminder of participation in the Olympic Day Run 2012 and the company plans on making more follow-up visits to these schools in the future to carry out more book distribution programmes.
