The Cricket Club of Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLP) won the Championship of the Tear B One Day series organised by Sri Lanka Cricket. SLPA achieved the victory defeating the SL Navy by three wickets. The event also became the first ever victory for SLPA in an inter-club premier series.
The SLPA has immensely contributed for the elevation of several spheres of sports such as volleyball, carom, netball, billiard and snooker in the country, bringing greater victories at national levels.
These achievements have extended a number of benefits for the sportsmen and sportswomen in Sri Lanka.
At present, a number of procedures have been implemented with the initiative of SLPA Chairman Dr. Priyath B. Wickrama and the senior management expecting a boost and an improved development of the glorious achievements through sports.
Hence, the steps implemented to obtain the opportunity to take part in the premier level cricket have become a much considered and awaited juncture in the history of SLPA.
Though the institution had not been able to take part in premier cricket, Suraj Randive who represents the national team serves as an executive officer at the SLPA. Meanwhile Ashan Priyanjana who captained the under 19 national team and several other players also represented Sri Lanka ‘A’ team are from the SLPA.
As the institution had not achieved the eligibility to take part in premier cricket the institution was unable to obtain the representation of these players as it was a prime factor to obtain the necessity to take part in premier cricket.
From this year, the SLPA has achieved that opportunity, the institution’s cricket club paving its path to take part in the premier cricket series organised by Sri Lanka Cricket. It is a glory for the SLPA to emerge winners at the very first series of premier cricket it took part.
The cricket team of the SLPA Cricket Club is captained by Shantha Kalavitigoda who represented the Sri Lanka test cricket team.
Dinusha Fernando who represented the Sri Lanka test and one-day cricket teams is also included in the SLPA cricket team.
Meanwhile, Shanuka Dissanayake, Ishan Muthalif, Tharindu Mendis, Hashan Gunathilake, Romesh Eranga, Tharaka Gunarathne, Ranesh Perera, Chanaka Komasaru, and Rakhitha Wimaladharma who emerged in premier cricket during the recent past are also included in the victories SLPA team.
It has also extended the inclusion of young cricketers namely, Anuk De Alwis, Sanjaya Fernando and Dinuk Jayasinghe.
Sajith Fernando who was among the handful of premier cricketers to exceed a score of ten thousand marks showcasing a brilliant game of cricket during his time, serves the Chief Coacher of the SLPA team while Priyantha Thisera who is an experienced administrator of cricket and a player of superb performance serves the Assistant Coacher of the SLPA team.
