Wesley College three-quarter Avishka Lee, in the same manner in which he mesmerises his opponents with his crafty runs, has passed the rest of the field during the second week of the Singer-the Sunday Times Most Popular Schoolboy Ruggerite of the Year and the School Team of the Year 2017 competition.

Adding a mammoth tally of 947 votes to his existing tally of three votes, Avishka stormed to the top of the Most Popular Ruggerite of the Year competition with a tally of 950 votes within two weeks.

Avishka’s progress pushes initial leader Yuzraan Lantra of Zahira College to second place. Yuzraan adds 63 to his count as his tally moves to 73, a mere six votes ahead of Sumudu Rankothge of Isipathana College. Sumudu received a similar count as Yuzraan during the completed week but with last week’s count his total reads 67.

Royal College skipper Ovin Askey is at fourth position with 28 votes ahead of teammate Rishmal Fernando, who has a count of 23. The overall list of competitors has reached 25 from 13, making the competition more interesting.

Avishka’s surge to the top helps his team Wesley College to take the lead in the Most Popular Rugby Team of the Year contest with 950 votes. Isipathana College follows in second with 88 votes, with Royal College (79) and Zahira College (74) trailing behind close to each other.

Unlike the start of last week with votes coming in at a crawl, the intensity of both competitions has picked up drastically within a week, and it is sure to become even more intense with 13 more weekends to go. The competitions, which enable readers to vote for their most preferred school rugby player of the ongoing Singer Schools Division I Rugby League Championship 2017, will run until 30 July.

Beginning from 23 April, the Sunday Times, along with Wijeya Newspapers publications – the Daily Mirror, Daily Lankadeepa and Ada - will publish coupons for 15 continuous weeks, numbered for each week from 1 to 15 with the deadline set on Thursdays of each week.
