The 104th Shakspeare Shield golf tournament, organised by Carson Cumberbatch Plc in collaboration with the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC), will be held on 5 July at the club’s course.
The Shakspeare Shield is the only golf competition open to employees and directors from registered companies, embassies, government departments and service organisations.
The competition is the oldest and grandest of the RCGC’s long list of corporate competitions, which speaks volumes for its pre-eminence, considering that the club itself is the second oldest Royal Club outside the British Isles. In essence, the Shakspeare Shield serves as an esteemed amalgam, combining a tournament armed with over a century of tradition and significance with two other entities – Carson Cumberbatch Plc and the RCGC – of similar vintage and prestige.
Play at this year’s tournament will be spread across a restructured format in order to fit proceedings into a single day, narrowing the players’ margin for error and heightening spectator interest and excitement. In addition to a raft of enthusiastic and vocal supporters, the competition also attracts some of the corporate sector’s premier golfing talent, setting the stage for what should be several riveting rounds of golfing action.
The Shakspeare Shield has been continuously sponsored by Carson Cumberbatch Plc since its inaugural edition in 1911. Carson Cumberbatch Plc is a diversified conglomerate with businesses across Sri Lanka and the South and Southeast Asian region. The group’s diverse business interests range from oil palm plantations in Malaysia and Indonesia, to breweries, investment portfolio management, real estate and leisure in Sri Lanka.
