Serena Williams withdrew from the Brisbane International tennis tournament after badly injuring her left ankle.

Playing in Australia for the first time since winning the 2010 Australian Open and her first tournament since losing last year’s U.S. Open final, Williams served for the match with a 6-2, 5-3 lead against Serbia’s Bojana Jovanovski when she twisted her ankle.

After receiving treatment, she resumed the match and lost the next point to suffer a service break. She held on to take the match, 6-2, 6-4, to advance to the quarterfinals.
