Former Trinity College, Sri Lanka fifteen’s skipper and Kandy SC Captain Sean Wijesinghe will once again be the Head Coach of the double champions Kandy Sports Club who took custody of the League and Clifford Cup last year.
Wijesinghe first captained Kandy SC in 2009 and led the side to the treble. He played his last game for the Kandy outfit two years ago, ending his club rugby career which spanned over 13 years for his home town club and the country.
Wijesinghe was selected to play for Sri Lanka for the first time at the launching ceremony of the Asian Five Nations tournament. He played for Trinity in 2000 under David Luchow and won his rugby and basketball colours while at school. He was an automatic choice for the national fifteens outfit playing against top Asian countries such as Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan and Taipei. Under his leadership Sri Lanka was promoted from Division I to the Top Five. While playing for Kandy, they won 10 league titles and an equal number of Clifford Cups during Sean’s presence.
He will have his schoolmate and sevens specialist Saliya Kumara as his deputy. Former Isipathana player Kapila Silva will be the Team Manager once more with Lasantha Wijesuriya heading the rugby committee. Former Kingswood player and Sri Lanka sevens specialist Gayan Weeraratne will lead the outfit in 2017/2018.
