Defending Milo knock-out champions, Science College and Trinity College both pulled out of the Under 20 Knock-out rugby tournament which will commence from 25 June at the CR &FC rugby grounds at Longdon Place. Semi finals and the final will take place at the Royal Sports Complex.
Science’ decision on pulling out was taken due to the tough financial constraints they are going through having run even this season without a proper sponsor. The school was propped up by a few old boys who contributed towards the expenditure of rugby at their Institution. Science’ sponsorship which is only 10 % of the total budget is roughly Rs. 6 million. With the junior rugby and the importance of looking after the youngsters for future tournaments this year Mount Lavinia School had taken this tough decision which is a major blow, even before the tournament kicks off in three days time. The reason behind Trinity pulling out is not clear. These two teams pulling out will make way for Katugastota Antonians and Wesley to come in to the playing 8.
Speaking to Daily FT, Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association (SLSRFA) Secretary Denzil Darling said “We have kindly requested both Science and Trinity re-consider their decision on pulling out.
