The highest award a Trinitian could win in his entire school career is the ‘Ryde Gold Medal’ which is awarded for the best all round student not only in sports but also in studies as well. This was won by Ryan Fernando for the year 2015. He won the “Lion” for boxing, Colours for rugby football and was also Senior Prefect at school until recently.
Ryan won Colours in rugby (2014) and was re-awarded in the following year. He became the second highest try scorer planting no less than eight tries. Ryan also represented Kandy Red against the Colombo Blues in order to pick the Junior Rugby Asiad team. He represented the junior national team at the Second Asian Youth games which took place in China.
Boxing was his pet sport winning his “Lion” in 2013. He led the Trinity Boxing Team in 2015 and 2016. He won many titles in boxing. A few of them were winning three National boxing Gold medals, highest bouts to knock out and undefeated for three long years. Last week he won the Junior Gold medal. He was awarded Sri Lanka school colours in 2014 and 2015.
Ryan not only accounted for the Ryde Gold Medal, boxing “Lion” and rugby colours but also he was the Senior Prefect of Trinity plus awarded the Sportsman of the Year for 2015. His father too was a sportsman representing Trinity at badminton (Lion) and hockey (Colours). Among those who have been awarded this Ryde Gold medal are Kumar Sangakkara and Lakshman Kadirgamar.
