Racing driver Upulwan Serasinghe filed a writ application No. 315/2014 in the Court of Appeal against then Minister of Sports Mahindananda Aluthgamage and Director of Sports Ranjini Jayakody, for having conducted an illegal Annual General Meeting of the National Association, Sri Lanka Automobile Sports (SLAS), in August 2014.
At the instigation of certain influential individuals, presently under investigation in another case, the former Minister and Director General included certain clubs which were not eligible to vote at the election, and also included several persons who were appointed as office bearers when in fact they had been so appointed in violation of the Sports Law.
The Court delivered judgement in favour of Serasinghe, whereby it concluded that the 1st respondent had acted in excess of his powers when he decided to conduct the elections at Sri Lanka Automobile Sports (SLAS).
All those elected at this AGM to hold office were thereby found illegally elected and all decisions made during this period therefore become null and void.
Viran Corea assisted by Sarita de Fonseka appeared for Serasinghe.
