This year’s Sri Lanka Junior Open Golf Championship, which will be sponsored by ‘Prima Sunrise Bread,’ will be held from 19 to 21 December 2011 at the Royal Colombo Golf Club, morning play.
It is a tournament that is open to both boys and girls under the age of 18 years and, has gained immense popularity as it serves as a platform for the Sri Lanka Golf Union to identify potential talent to play at the national level.
Ranked the most prestigious tournament for young golfers in Sri Lanka and over 60 players are expected to battle it out for top honours demonstrating the growing popularity of the sport. Sri Lanka Junior Open Championship was first played in year 1975.
Those who did well as past champions at this tournament were Mithun Perera, Binupa Wijesinghe, Lalith Kumara and Tissa Chandradasa have turned into Sri Lanka’s top golfers. Dhanika de Silva of British School, Colombo won the Championship in year 2010.
The tournament will be conducted according to the following age groups viz; age group 15-17 years (Gold Division) age group 11-14 years (Silver Division) and age group 10 years and under (Bronze Division).
The overall winner will be declared the Sri Lanka Junior National Golf Champion for the year 2011.
‘Prima Sunrise Bread’ has committed to sponsor this tournament for the fourth consecutive year. “Prima Sunrise Bread’s pledge is to build a long term relationship in promoting the sport among youth and uplifting the standard of junior golf in Sri Lanka. This year’s tournament is likely to see the emerging new talent and expect a high standard of golf among the juniors.
