One day one of the Sri Lanka Junior Open over 70 juniors took to the field at the Royal Colombo Golf Club to battle it out for top honours under tough conditions. Sachin De Silva leads in the championship with gross score of 78, closely followed by Zaffar Sikkandar at 81 and Chalitha Pushpika at 84.
In the age group category 11-14 years (Silver Division), Prashan Peiris shot a brilliant round of gross 76 to take the lead from Ishira Fernando gross 83. Also Dhanaraja and Sathsara Dilshan both shot gross 94 each to stay in contention.
Stiff competition was evident in the most junior category age group 10 and under with Nigel Fernando from the USA taking the lead with gross 45 over nine holes followed by M. Hirushan 47 and Arvind Hirdramani and Levon Niyarepola both at 53. Top honours are to be decided on day two of the tournament.
This year’s Sri Lanka Junior Open Golf Championship is sponsored for the fifth time by Sunrise Bread promoted by Ceylon Agro Industries and is being played from 19 December onwards. It is organised by the Sri Lanka Golf Union and the overall winner will be declared the Sri Lanka Junior National Golf Champion for 2012.
