President Mahinda Rajapakse inspected the construction work of the Digana Sports Complex being built in Kandy last Saturday.
Once completed, the fully fledged sports complex will comprise state-of-the-art facilities including running tracks, an indoor auditorium, swimming pool and residential facilities for male and female athletes.
The Government has allocated Rs. 210 million for the first stage of the construction of the facility. However, Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage has requested the President to allocate more funds as the present allocation is not sufficient.
During the inspection, the President advised the officials to carry out the construction of the facility systematically while paying attention to the environment.
The President also inspected several suitable blocks of land for the domestic airport to be constructed in the Kandy district. A land block in the Tennekumbura area of Randenigala in Kandy was specially considered during President’s inspection tour.
The President has advised the Ministry of Livestock Development and the Sri Lanka Air Force to study the sites and provide a report on them.
Central Province Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa, Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake, Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage and MPs Sajin Vaas Gunawardena and Lohan Ratwatte also participated in the President’s inspection tour.
