At the Indo-Sri Lanka Open Karate Championships last week Peterite Karatekas Randev and Rehan Athukorala secured two gold medals and one silver medal.
Their trainer, D.M.D Nimal, who is a national champion, said that it was nice to see two brothers competing for the country and urged them to continue working hard to replicate such success in the future.
Fourteen-year-old Randev, who is the elder of the two, has won multiple medals for Sri Lanka - competing as part of the Sri Lanka schools team – at the Milo Karate Championships in Malaysia, the Nepal Open Karate Championships and the Asia Karate Cup in Malaysia. At the World Karate Championships in Iran he secured two medals for Sri Lanka. Athukorala was recognised as the ‘Best Sportsman’ - Karate at last year’s Peterite Colours Night. Both sportsmen are managed by their father, black belt Karateka Dr. Rohantha Athukorala.
“I must acknowledge the support extended by the Rector of St. Peter’s Rev Fr. Trevor Martin and the master-in-charge and his coach for the last six years sensei D.M.D. Nimal. Karate is not about winning medals but using the discipline of it for life for character building,” said Dr. Athukorala.
