Isipathana Skipper Omalka Gunaratne is tipped to lead the Sri Lanka Youth rugby team at the Asian Under 20 Sevens, which will take place in Malaysia and Hong Kong.
The first leg will be worked off in Johor Nahru on 15 and 16 August with the second leg taking place on 21 and 22 August at the Hong Kong Football Club in Causeway Bay.
Sri Lanka missed out on this opportunity last year when the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union failed to send a side due to a lack of preparation and timing. Meanwhile, the Women’s team will take part in the Asian Sevens tournament in China (5 and 6 September), Colombo (10 and 11 October), Hong Kong (7 and 8 November) and Tokyo (27 and 28 November)
The men’s team will be selected soon after the Inter-Club Sevens, which will take place this weekend at the Race Course rugby grounds. They too will take part in the Asian Sevens series in China, Colombo and Hong Kong with Fazil Marija likely to lead the outfit.
