Old Sebastianites, led by Luckey Rogers Fernando, emerged as the new champions of the fourth Lanka Cavaliers Veterans (Over-45) Six-a-Side Cricket Tournament 2016, when they dethroned the 2015 winner, MCA, in the finals played at De Zoysa Park on 7 August.
Upon completion of the round robin stage, the group winners Old Palians (Group ‘A’), MCA (Group ‘B’), Old Sebastianites (Group ‘C’) and the Olcott Schools (Group ‘D’) advanced to the semi-finals.
In the first semi-final, Old Palians (62/0; Kamal Rohana 31, Gamini Perera 16) lost to MCA (68/0; Wasanthalal Fernando 54 not out).
In the second semi-final, Old Sebastianites (68/2; Dhammika Rajapakse 42, Luckey Rogers Fernando 23) beat Olcott Schools (65/2; A. Sirimanne 38).
Final: Old Sebastianites 79 for 2 (Dhammika Rajapaksa 46, Luckey Rogers Fernando 25) beat MCA 63/2 (Wasanthalal Fernando 15, Gamini Fernando 35, S. Gunaratne 1/14, S. Jayawardena 1/16).
Special Awards:
Best Fielder: Sujeewa Gunaratne from Old Sebastianites
Best Bowler: Deepal Madurapperuma from Old Thurstanites
Best Batsman: Dhamika Rajapakse from Old Sebastianites
Most Senior Player: S. Junkeer from the Association of Cricket Umpires
Awards were presented by the Chief Guest Gamini Silva (back on a short holiday from Bangladesh) Guest of Honour Roger Wijesuriya and Sri Lanka Cricket Vice President K. Mathivanan.
