ESPNCricinfo: Seam bowler Thamsyn Newton took her first wickets in T20Is and in doing so ushered New Zealand Women to a 3-0 series sweep over Sri Lanka Women in Nelson. She claimed 3 for 9 in four overs and was instrumental in the visitors succumbing to 86 for 9 after they were put in.
Hasini Perera was run out off the fourth ball of the match, captain Chamari Atapattu was dismissed for 4 off 11 in the fourth over and by the end of the six overs of Powerplay, Sri Lanka were 25 for 3. Wicketkeeper Dilani Manodara made 23 off 19 balls, with two fours and a six, but became 20-year old Newton’s first strike as New Zealand asserted their dominance.
Newton, playing only her second T20I, came on as sixth-change. She struck twice in the 14th over and then again in the 16th to leave Sri Lanka at 70 for 7. The tail could do little more than survive as offfspinner Leigh Kasperek, who bowled a triple-wicket maiden in the final over of the last match, helped herself to 2 for 7.
New Zealand then gunned down the target of 87 with Amy Satterthwait’s 33 off 21 balls, with six fours and Rachel Priest’s 37 off 23 balls with four fours and a six. They won with 10.4 overs and nine wickets to spare and Sri Lanka completed their tour with nine out of nine losses, including the tour game at the start of November.
Chief Scores: New Zealand Women 90 for 1 (Priest 37*, Satterthwaite 33) beat Sri Lanka Women 86 for 9 (Newton 3-9, Kasperek 2-7) by nine wickets.
