For the second consecutive year NDB, together with the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC), will host the annual ‘Inter-School Golf Championship’ on Sunday 6 September at the RCGC. This year’s tournament will be organised by past pupils of the Holy Family Convent, Bambalapitiya.
Speaking at the media briefing for the tournament, which is being held for the third straight year, head of the organising committee Usha De Silva said: “This year Holy Family Convent has taken charge of organising the 3rd RCGC Inter-School Alumni Golf Tournament in association with NDB. The opportunity of hosting this event rotates amongst the respective school alumni on a yearly basis. Therefore, we are glad to play the lead role in this year’s tournament which is of a unique nature and is being conducted for the third time in the history of golf in Sri Lanka.”
The tournament, which is being organised under a ‘Big Match’ theme, will be played on a five-ball Stableford basis and will feature more than 240 golfers representing, as of publication, 24 schools including five girls schools from all over Sri Lanka.
Also speaking at the media briefing, RCGC Vice Captain Primal Wijayanayake, elaborated on the tournament. “It is a unique tournament. It is one its kind in our golfing calendar at RCGC, where it’s run kind of in the theme of the big matches. We compete inter-school, but when we say inter-school they’re not schoolchildren; they’re mainly past pupils of the schools. There are a few present students as well but I think about 95% are past pupils of various schools. As for the format, this year we have made a slight change where both the ladies and the men will play in the tournament and the winner will be the team with best overall score, irrespective of gender.” A host of rewards will be on offer with the winning team getting five plane tickets to Thailand and several other prizes such as mobile phones and golfing bags on the line as well.
Commenting on the partnership, NDB Chief Financing Officer, Faizan Ozman said: “We are proud to partner RCGC and sponsor this event for a second consecutive year, and bring together one of the most celebrated golfing events of the year. This is the only dedicated inter-school golf tournament in the country and with this partnership we hope to promote golf in the country. We also believe this partnership will enable us to present yet another stimulating experience to our Privilege Select Banking clientele.” The tournament is open to all amateurs with men, women and juniors with a club handicap invited to contest. The tournament will conclude with an award ceremony.
Entries are currently open and registrations will be made at RCGC on a first-come, first-served basis, with the registration deadline set for Wednesday 2 September. For more information contact Mahinda Perera on 0722316166.
