Nazeem Mohamed was elected the President of the most powerful provincial union, the Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU). He was uncontested for another term during the Annual General Meeting held at the Havelock Sports Club Auditorium on 16 February.
Nazeem with a proven track record in Rugby is a former Science College Skipper and led CH&FC from 1999 to 2000. He also represented the country from 1992-1999 and took part in the Hong Kong sevens.
WPRFU activities are conducted under Development, Tournaments and Education. Introduction of development officers to introduce Rugby in 20 Schools in the Province was a major initiative by the WPRFU.
The Inter club open 7s tournament, Under 10, 12, 14 and 16 seven-a-side tournaments are successfully carried out annually by the union.
The WPRFU also launched the Anti doping booklet in Sinhala in 2015 to educate Players, Coaches and Trainers. The Union has successfully conducted computer training programs for Coaches, strength and conditioning workshops, IRB level 1 Seminars as a part of their education drive.
The WPRFU has also helped clubs and schools with financial aid, with one of the success stories being Kannangara MV reaching the division 1 Schools league a few year ago.
Introduction of women’s rugby to the Western Province Schools is one of the major activities planned for the future.
