Mount Lavinia and Matale Thomians square off on hockey field today

Today Matale town will be abuzz when the inaugural schools hockey big match between St. Thomas College Matale and S. Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia will be played at Edward Park, Matale at 4.30 p.m. This will be preceded by the Thomian Walk from St. Thomas’ College Matale to the venue of the match.

The Matale Thomians hold a slight edge but the Mount Lavinia Thomians outfit is no pushover after their wins over Trinity and Royal last week. 

Over the last few years some of the national hockey players produced by St. Thomas’ Matale are the famous Wijekoon brothers, Herbert, Ranjith and Chandra, Dr. R. Mahendra, G.H. Rupasinghe, G.H. Jayatissa, M. Rajanathan, S. Selvakumar, A. Costs and Ranjith Alahakoon just to name a few while the Mount Lavinia lads have produced the Abeynaike brothers, Ishak, Sahabdeen, J.D. Bandaranaike, Michael Tissera, Dr. Jayantha Seneviratne among a long list of luminaries.
