Mobil Racing’s Dinesh Jayawardana established his presence yet again during the prestigious Mahagastota Festival of Speed by becoming the fastest driver of the day, while teammate Dilan Seneviratne made a perfect comeback to motor racing after a two-year break.
The 83rd Mahagastota Hill Climb, organised by the Ceylon Motor Sports Club, took place at the Nuwara Eliya Estate this weekend. This event, which is one of the most prestigious events on the Sri Lankan racing calendar, played host to a star-studded cast of drivers and riders who engaged in a race against the clock.
Jayawardana, competing in the SL-GT cars up to 3500cc event, finished the uphill drive in just 33.657 seconds in his second run, having clocked a time of 34.137 seconds earlier.
With this victory, Mobil Brand Ambassador Dinesh Jayawardana has now completed an amazing run in both the historical hill climb events in the country, following his record-setting performances at the Eliyakanda Hill Climb a few weeks earlier.
Darin Weerasinghe took 34.236 seconds to reach the finish line and that earned second place in the SL-GT category. Shafraz Junaid was the third-fastest, clocking 38.570 seconds.
Meanwhile, Seneviratne proved to be too much for the others when he clocked the fastest times in the Formula Ford 1600cc and Formula Modified up to 1665cc categories.
Seneviratne, making his return to the race track after a two-year hiatus, made an immediate impact, clocking 36.981 seconds in his second run during the Formula Ford 1600cc event, almost three seconds faster than his closest compatriot Junaid. Junaid clocked 39.224 seconds to take second place.
Nadeera Jinasena spent 39.318 seconds to reach the end of the track and rounded off the top three podium spots.
In the Formula Modified up to 1665cc category, Seneviratne sealed the top spot, clocking 34.760 seconds in his first attempt on the track.
Overall, it capped an amazing day of racing for Team Mobil with three wins in the three fastest categories of racing at the Mahagastota Hill Climb.
