The 33rd MBA Inter-Firm Team Badminton Championships 2016 came to a close on 30 October with the valiant shuttlers of the McLarens Group emerging as the overall champions of the tournament once again.
The tournament, consisting of over 60 companies and 218 teams competing in 19 categories, is categorised as one of the most competitive events on the badminton calendar. Through fierce competition, the McLarens shuttlers fought their way to the trophy utilising skill, sheer force of will and unwavering determination to win the overall championship along with the most prestigious titles in the respective divisions.
Many of McLarens’ team members secured divisional victories and podium finishes and came first in the Men’s ‘A’ Division and Women’s ‘A’ Division.
The other divisions McLarens won are the Men’s ‘B’ Division, Men’s Veterans ‘A’ Division and Women’s Over-35 (Veterans) Division. Second place finishes came in the Men’s Masters and Men’s ‘F’ divisions with a third place victory claimed in the Women’s ‘B’ Division and an additional fourth place podium finish in the Men’s Veterans ‘A’ Division and Women’s ‘A’ Division totalling 10 podium finishes in the entire tournament.
The MBA feted the McLarens Group shuttlers for their outstanding skill and resolve by awarding divisional Best Player awards to Sachin Dias (Men’s ‘A’), Thilini Hendahewa (Women’s ‘A’), Ovin Rathnasekera (Men’s ‘B’), Upendra Jayawardena (Men’s Veterans ‘A’) and Kaushali Dissanayake (Women’s Over-35 (Veterans)).
These remarkable athletes with their awe-inspiring victories and achievements have brought great honour and pride to the sport and to the McLarens Group too. They serve as role models to aspiring sportsmen and women.
