The first-ever Inter Bank Badminton Team Championship organised by Seylan Bank Sports Club got underway at the Mercantile Badminton Association Courts, Colombo 7, on 6 and 7 March. 14 teams representing 10 banks battled through the league phase in four groups.
The top team of each group qualified to play in the Grand Slam semifinals, the group runners up will play the cup semifinals and other teams will battle for the plate in a knockout draw.
Team HNB comprising Sri Lanka number two Dinuka Karunaratne eased their way winning both their ties comfortably while Seylan A with eleven-time Sri Lanka national champion Renu Chandrika De Silva, also had a clean slate in their group. Although NTB A qualified for the Grand Slam semifinals, they suffered a shocking 4-3 defeat at the hands of a spirited Bank of Ceylon team who performed a giant killing act. In another surprise, the strong NDB team also went down to Seylan B by 6-1.
The semifinals of each category will be played on 12 March and the finals will be played on 13 March at the same venue.
