Wesley College three-quarter Avishka Lee increased his grip on top position, with his team Wesley College following suit, during the sixth week count of the Singer-the Sunday Times Most Popular Schoolboy Ruggerite of the Year and the School Team of the Year 2017 competitions.
Lee’s tally reached 2,383 as he leads a lineup of 31 others on the players’ list and Wesley becomes the most popular team so far with a tally of 2,380 votes. Lee’s weekly vote count was 123 while second in line Ananda College’s Sasindu Rathnaweera received 100 votes to take his count up to 454. However, the gap between the two – 1,929 - is large considering the number of coupons coming in.
Sumudu Rankothge of Isipathana College and Ovin Askey of Royal College have indicated that they are ready to challenge the top in the time to come. Both of them are at third and fourth respectively with Yuzraan Lantra of Zahira College lying in fifth.
In the team competition, Wesley has obtained 2,380 votes as against other teams who are still stuck with three-digit totals. Isipathana College remains second ahead of Ananda College, who took over third position from Royal College last week.
The competition is well set to heat up with nine more weekends to go. The competition, which enables readers to vote for their most preferred school rugby player of the ongoing Singer Schools Division I Rugby League Championship 2017, will run until 30 July.
Beginning from 23 April, the Sunday Times, along with Wijeya Newspapers publications -- Daily Mirror, Daily Lankadeepa and Ada – has been publishing weekly coupons, numbered for each week from 1 to 15, with the deadline set on Thursdays of each week. There are a total of 31 players on the list but the names of those who have 30 or more votes will be published from this week.
