The annual sports meet of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University was ceremonially held on 17 and 18 March at Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium, Diyagama.
Around 2,500 military and civilian undergraduates divided among six Squadrons named Gemune, Gajaba, Perakum, Vijayaba, Mahasen and Walagamba competed in 35 different track and field events in this sports meet.
The opening ceremony of this event was held with the participation of Brig. Indunil Ranasinghe, Deputy Vice Chancellor and the Chairman of Sports Council of KDU, as the Chief Guest.
The closing ceremony of this major annual sport event was held in the evening of 18 March. Rear Admiral Jagath Ranasinghe, the Vice Chancellor of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University attended the occasion as the Chief Guest.
Five new KDU records were established in the annual sports meet 2017 by C/L/Cpl Nithu Linka – Perakum Squadron, 3000 m – Women’s event; Day Scholar A.I. Nilaweera – Gemunu Squadron 100 m Hurdles – Women’s event; C/Sgt H.M.H. Senarath – Perakum Squadron 400 m – Men’s event; Day Scholar W.S. Shanuka – Vijayaba Squadron 400 m – Men’s event; Day Scholar W.S. Shanuka – Vijayaba Squadron 200 m – Men’s event.
Out of six Squadrons, Vijayaba Squadron emerged the champions of the annual sports meet 2017, scoring 405 points. Mahasen Squadron scoring 290 points and Perakum and Walagamba Squadrons scoring 225 points became 1st and 2nd runners up respectively. Day Scholar W.S. Shanuka and Day Scholar A.I. Nilaweera were adjudged the Best Male Athlete and Best Female Athlete of 2017.
