KIA, one of the trendiest automobile brands in Sri Lanka, today renewed its support to Royal College’s 1st XV Rugby Team for the third successive year. As Sole Team Sponsor, KIA will have branding rights for the rugby jerseys of the senior rugby players of the college in all inter-school games and tournaments of the 2014 rugby season. KIA’s sponsorship agreement was formally signed at the Royal College Sports Complex by the directors of KIA Motors (Lanka) Ltd. and senior officials of Royal College Rugby. Speaking at the event, KIA Motors (Lanka) Managing Director Mahen Thambiah said: “Our involvement with Royal College Rugby over the past two years has given us immense satisfaction. KIA is a brand that has a global association with sport at the highest levels. We hope that this sponsorship will contribute to the continuing development of facilities for the players, and build team performance.” Royal College’s rugby history dates back to 1916. Two of the most looked-forward-to annual rugby fixtures in the schools’ rugby calendar, for the Bradby Shield and the Michael Gunaratne Trophy, involve Royal College and arch rivals Trinity College and St. Thomas’ College respectively. On the world stage of sports KIA is the Major Sponsor of the Australian Open tennis championship, a FIFA Partner and sponsor the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Rafael Nadal, one of the greatest tennis players of the modern era, is KIA’s Global Brand Ambassador. Other sports related sponsorships of the iconic Korean car brand include a five-year deal for exclusive naming rights to the historic Oval ground and the primary shirt sponsorship of Surrey County Cricket Club. KIA Motors (Lanka) Ltd. has represented the KIA brand in Sri Lanka since 1996.
