As a part of its commitment to develop and nurture sporting talent in Sri Lanka, Janashakthi took on the sponsorship of the squash nationals; the showcase event of the year.
Conducted by the Sri Lanka Squash Federation and sponsored by Janashakthi Insurance the tournament was held at the Sugathadasa indoor stadium, under the patronage of Janashakthi Deputy General Manager General Sales Graeme La Brooy.
This is the 10th consecutive year Janashakthi Insurance has sponsored the national ranking squash tournament.
While veteran player, Navin Samarasinghe clinched the Men’s title beating Binura Jayasuriya, Mihiliya Methsarani claimed the Women’s title beating Naduni Gunawardena.
Commenting on the sponsorship, Janashakthi Insurance Managing Director Prakash Schaffter, said that Janashakthi was proud to sponsor the showcase event in the squash calendar.
“Although squash is a relatively new game to Sri Lanka, it has gained tremendous popularity among all age groups.
“Having sponsored several Sri Lankan test cricket series during the past few years, we have also extended our support to several other sports at national level such as hockey, rowing, sailing and athletics, thus reiterating our commitment to the long term development of sports in Sri Lanka” he said.
The tournament which attracted around 110 entries saw the participation of all front line players. The four day long tournament consisted of men’s and women’s open, Veteran’s over 35, 45, 50 and 55 and the men’s and women’s novices events.
While thanking Janashakthi for being the sole sponsor of the premier event in the squash calendar, the President of the Sri Lanka Squash federation Commodore Palitha Weerasinghe stated that squash has seen a great resurgence in popularity among all age groups in Sri Lanka.
This has been demonstrated by the increasing number of entries each year.
