Hong Kong, South Korea and Sri Lanka to host Asian Sevens 2016

Sri Lanka will need to come on top in Asia

Hong Kong, South Korea and Sri Lanka will host the Asian Sevens rugby series 2016.  Hong Kong will host the first leg at the Hong Kong Stadium on 3 and 4 September with eight men’s and eight women’s team locking horns in the tournament opener. 

The second leg will then move to South Korea which will take place in Seoul on 24 and 25 September. The final and third leg will be worked off in Sri Lanka either in Colombo or Kandy on 15 and 16 October. All three tournaments will see an equal of eight men’s and eight women’s team in action. Sri Lanka ended at number 4 last year under Fazil Marija.

After the Inter Club league rugby tournament being completed next week, the Clifford Cup knock out will be worked off in March this year. Soon afterwards Sri Lanka rugby training will commence training for the 15-a-side tournament in Asia which will take place in Malaysia in May 2016. 

Sri Lanka will play along with hosts Malaysia, Philippines and Kazakhstan. The winner in this tournament will play the last placed team in top three among Hong Kong, South Korea and Japan in a home and away basis for the promotion and relegation for 2017. 

The last qualifying team for the Rio Rugby sevens 2016 will be known when the 16 teams in globe who ended in the top four in their region will lock horns in Monte Carlo. The Sri Lankan men’s team will too take wing to Monte Carlo in June this year.

The Sri Lanka Under 20 outfit will be in Malaysia in end July for the first leg of the Asian Youth Sevens series. The second leg will be worked off in Hong Kong on 6 and 7 August. The longer version of the game will take place in December among Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, Taipei and Malaysia. The hosting nation is yet to be announced.
