The Hirdaramani Group recently hosted its inaugural Parmanand Hirdaramani Memorial Challenge Trophy Men’s Cricket Sixes. The event saw the participation of 28 teams from business units across the island and was held at the BRC Grounds in Colombo.
The all-day event brought together team members located in different parts of the country to play the nation’s most loved game. With a carnival atmosphere, attendees enjoyed music, food and activities such as face painting. Some enthusiastic supporters went the extra mile by forming cheer squads decked out in team colours. The event provided a platform for employees to display their cricketing skills whilst fostering team spirit despite the natural competitiveness of the game.
The first round saw some interesting matches despite overcast conditions, and as the tournament progressed to round two, the determination of the surviving teams was evident.
The first semi-final was considered the ‘match of the tournament’ and was fiercely fought. Challenged with an improbable target, WP Seethawaka, led by its captain, played an impressive match to meet the score set by Hirdaramani Knit Seethawaka.
It was a nail-biting finish and came down to the last ball from which three runs were required to win. WP Seethawaka however managed to score two runs which saw the match end in a draw.
Based on tournament rules, Hirdaramani Knit Seethawaka progressed to the finals. The final was played in front of an animated crowd that understood the significance of the honour that would be bestowed on the team that would win the first ever Paramand Hirdaramani Memorial Challenge Trophy. Ultimately Hirdaramani Industries Kuruwita powered its way to a much deserved victory amidst the jubilation of the team’s supporters.
The tournament came to a close with a presentation ceremony. The vote of thanks was delivered by Renuka Basnayake – Assistant HR Manager, Group HR of the organising committee and it captured the history of the company whilst recognising the true sporting spirit on the field and enthusiasm of the spectators.
Thereafter, the presentation of medals and the trophies took place. The presentation party consisted of Hirdaramani Directors who were present at the event to support the staff.
The winners table is as follows: Overall Winners, Hirdaramani Industries Kuruwita of Woven Cluster, Overall Runners-Up, Hirdaramani Knit Seethawaka.
The individual award for Best Batsman was picked up by Upul from WP Seethawaka while the awards for Best Bowler and the Man of the Match were both awarded to Janaka of Hirdaramani Industries Kuruwita.
WP Seethawaka and Hirdaramani Knit Katunayake were pronounced Semifinalists.
Vinod Hirdaramani – Director, Hirdaramani Group commenting on the event said: “Maintaining a good work/life balance can be challenging, however events such as this provide the perfect outlet for our team to socialise, foster camaraderie and keep fit. Team bonding and interaction within all levels of an organisation is healthy and can be carried off the field and into the workplace.
The Hirdaramani Group continues to invest in developing the talents of its people by supporting a wide range of extra-curricular activities for its staff, as part of the group’s commitment to ensure the overall wellbeing of all employees.”
