The recently-concluded West Asia Rugby Champions League was a huge success for Kandy, who ended up runners-up to the Doha Rugby Football Club.
Kandy fielded a second string side for this tournament due to several of their players having to do national duty. Due to this they lost seven of their players. Furthermore, their playmaker and skipper Fazil Marija was nursing an injury while Nigel Ratwatte pulled out due to academic commitments.
Speaking to Daily FT, the skipper on tour Sean Wijesinghe said: “It was a good opportunity for the younger players as the local rugby season is only two months away. This was a great opportunity and will give a great opportunity for emerging players. This will motivate them to reach higher and represent their country and wear the national jersey which is the dream of many players.”
