Eight teams will battle it out for the ultimate prize in the Dialog Rugby League, as the premier tourney in Sri Lanka’s rugby calendar will kick-off with Air Force SC and Navy SC scrumming down at the tournament opener today at the Navy Grounds, Welisara from 4p.m. onwards. This will be followed by Havelock’s vs Police SC at 6:30 p.m. under lights at the Havelock’s Grounds, Colombo.
Rugby is one of the most revered sports in Sri Lanka, with an avid fan following from all segments in society. The teams fighting for the Dialog Rugby League 2015/16 include Kandy SC, CR & FC, CH & FC, Havelock’s SC, Police SC, Army SC, Navy SC and Air Force FC, and this tournament will be followed by the Dialog Clifford Cup Knockout Tournament.
This is the fourth consecutive year that Dialog has been associated with the League and Clifford Cup knockout tournaments, who is also the proud sponsor of the national rugby team. In the 2014/15 season, Kandy SC put on an entertaining display of skills and power to emerge Champions ahead of a solid Navy SC outfit, who unsettled the Kings of Kandy in the 2013/2014 league. Navy SC also won the blue ribbon tournament, the Clifford Cup, beating a spirited Havies team 27-22, in a nail biting final played at the Racecourse International Grounds, Colombo.
Dialog is a prolific sponsor of sports in Sri Lanka, closely associated in developing School Cricket, Athletics, Club Football, Club Rugby, Volleyball and Disabled Sports, and has sponsored national contingents to international events including the Olympics, Paralympics, Commonwealth, Asian, SAF and FESPIC Games.
