Day and McIlroy ready to start WGC-Cadillac together alongside Spieth

Reuters: Golf fans will be treated to the rare sight of the game’s top three players grouped together at this week’s WGC-Cadillac Championship in Miami which opened on Thursday.

American Jordan Spieth, world number one, second-ranked Australian Jason Day and third-ranked Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy will play the first two rounds of the elite World Golf Championships event, at the Trump National Doral Resort, in each other’s company.

This will be only the second time that Spieth, Day and McIlroy have been grouped together on the PGA Tour, and McIlroy was looking forward to the prospect as he prepared for Thursday’s opening round.

“It is a very risk-reward golf course with a lot of water and if you take it on and hit the right shots it can give you an advantage,” said the 26-year-old McIlroy.

“You have to pick and choose your spots where to be aggressive and where not to. But you know there are four par fives that you can be aggressive on and the bigger hitters can reach so do you want to take advantage of those, but then par threes are tough. You know it is not a golf course where it is ‘Bombs Away!’ but at the same time a little bit of length can give you an advantage.”

Both Spieth and McIlroy will tee off on Thursday on the challenging Blue Monster layout after missing the cut in their most recent PGA Tour starts.
