The Central Province Table Tennis Championship, organised by the Kandy District Table Tennis Association, kicked off at the Jagath Rajapakse International Indoor Stadium, Doluwa today and will continue through tomorrow.
There will be boys and girls under 8, under 10, under 12, under 15, under 18 and the open event for men and women.
Defending champions in the girl’s category will be the 14-year-old Samadhi Hettiarachchi from Mahamaya who beat the senior national runner-up Ridmi Karadanarachchi. The boys’ encounter will see Thilina Wijesiri take on Chathura Gunasekera, Dinesh Kavishka, Prasad de Silva, D. Karadanarachchi and Krishan Wickremaratne also vying for honours in the same category.
In the under 15 girls category Thanushi Rodrigo of Mahamaya is the champion with Samadhi Hettiarachchi also capable of giving a good account of herself. In the boys segment, Chathura Gunasekera of Sussex will have the edge over Sakila Karunaratne and Pium Ekanayake.
In the under 18 girls segment, defending champion Praveena Silva of Girls High School Kandy, will face competition from Thanushi Rodrigo of Mahamaya. In the boys under 18 event, Udaya Ranasinghe and Dinesh Kavishka will battle it out for supremacy.
