Carlton Sports Club staged a stupendous performance to beat their arch rivals Havelocks Bambaras 19 points (two goals, one try) to 14 (two goals) in the final played at Science College Grounds Mt. Lavinia on 25 September .
More than 280 participants from 24 teams representing clubs, development squads, old boys associations and mercantile sectors locked horns at the Western Province Inter Club open invitation Rugby 7’s tournament, which was proudly sponsored by Asian Finance Ltd., which was worked off on 24 and 25 September.
Top players from leading clubs took part in this grand 7’s tournament. One such player was dashing wing three quarter Kandy star player and former Sri Lanka Captain Sanjeewa Jayasinghe, who is also an old boy of Science College Mt.Lavinia. Jayasinghe retires after this 7’s tournament.
This tournament was organised by the Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU).
The results: Cup – Carlton SC Beat Havelock Bambaras 19 points to l-4; Plate – Jawatha lions beat Old Kannangara 12 points to 7; Bowl – Old Moratuwa SC beat Old Wesleyites SC 17 points to 12; Shield – Old Mudalians beat Black Hawk 22 points to 12; while the Saucer was won by Kothalawala Defence Academy ‘B,’ which beat Moratuwa University ‘B’ 19 points to 05.
The match referee was Charith Kodagoda.
