PARIS (AFP): David Beckham is expected to attend next month’s Qatar ATP Open in Doha where he could sign for the Qatari-backed French league leaders Paris Saint Germain.
The 36-year-old’s presence at the January 2-8 ATP tournament was suggested to AFP by a source close to Qatar Sports Investments (QSI), PSG’s majority shareholder on Thursday.
The president of the Qatar Tennis Federation, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, is also head of QSI.
French newspapers on Wednesday had trumpeted Beckham’s imminent arrival at PSG.
Reports indicate he will sign a lucrative 5 million euro deal in early January.
Beckham’s presence in Qatar will also coincide with his expected next club’s mid-season training camp in Doha from January 1-5.
PSG are due to meet one of Beckham’s former clubs, AC Milan, in a friendly in Dubai on January 4 before returning to France for the first game of 2012 on January 8.
PSG took over the summit of the French League on Wednesday with a 1-0 win at Saint Etienne.
