Day three of the UTE-CAT Sri Lanka Open Golf Championship produced fascinating incidents and a ‘ding-dong’ battle between the top 3 on the leader board up to the last shot of the 3rd Round.
First day leader Prabagaran drew alongside Mithun on the 3rd hole with Anura Rohana dropping a further stroke behind. However at the halfway mark of the 3rd Round Anura Rohana with Birdies on the 5th and 7th got into a one stroke lead from Prabagaran with Mithun dropping shots on the 3rd and 8th to be one shot further behind.
Mithun then fired 3 Birdies on the 10th, 12th and 14th to draw level with Anura Rohana.
The closing holes of the 3rd Round were extremely eventful, with the 15th hole producing a shocker where Mithun from the greenside bunker of the Par 5, 15th hole playing his 3rd shot ‘thinned it’ over the green into the water for a double-bogey, whilst Anura Rohana holed yet another Birdie to take a 2 stroke lead with a ‘double-shot’ swing.
The pendulum continued to sway with Prabagaran Birdieing the 16th. More action was yet to come when Mithun had a ‘double-bogey’ on the 17th, to Anura’s and Praba’s Par’s.
The closing hole of the 3rd Round was the most dramatic, when Anura Rohana’s 2nd shot was ‘caught’ by a coconut tree and according to the Golf Rules the Player has to identify his ball prior to obtaining a penalty drop! Considering the circumstances Anura Rohana could not climb the tree and a volunteer went up the tree to retrieve the ball and fittingly received the loudest round of applause! Nett result was that Anura Rohana had a ‘double-bogey’ but still managed to hold on to a slender one stroke lead from Prabagaran with Mithun Perera a further stroke behind.
The best card of the day was produced by N.Ranga who shot a 4 under Par 67 which was clearly the best score for the day.
N Ranga who was lying in joint 17th place overnight climbed the leader board to 7th place at the end of Round 3.
A more fascinating day’s play awaits, as the curtain falls on the 2011 Sri Lanka Open Golf Championship with the 4th Round being played this morning at the Ridgeways Golf Course, RCGC.
