Sponsored by UTE-CAT, the prestigious Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) members’ match play challenge on handicap gets underway on Saturday, 8 July with the qualifier stroke play round serving as a prelude to the knockout match play stage.
The annual board events for men and ladies are a feature on the RCGC calendar, introduced to honour the legendary Pin Fernando and his wife Pam, who were both undoubtedly the king and queen of match play golf in Sri Lanka. The late Pin Fernando’s match play record is unmatched with 19 RCGC Club Championship titles, while the late Pam Fernando held the Guinness World Record for being the oldest lady to win a national golf title. All the major championships played in the match play format are played without a handicap but the Pin and Pam Fernando Trophy is an opportunity for all respective gentlemen and lady members who hold a valid handicap to participate, qualify and then play in the thrilling match-play stage to win the coveted trophy.
The annual event has been sponsored by United Tractor & Equipment (UTE), the family business of the Late Pin Fernando, which has now been passed on to the fourth generation after Pin’s son Priath (who also won this event), retired as Chairman in 2017.
Although having retired from UTE, Priath invested in a Golf Simulator Project, Urban Greens, which has also come forward to offer a free package to all participants of the Pin Fernando Trophy 2017. The qualifying round is on Saturday, 8 July 2017 at the RCGC, followed by the knockout stage starting on Tuesday, 11 July with the final on 14 July.
