Amãna Takaful emerge champions at Mercantile Sevens Football Tournament

Amãna Takaful emerged Champions at the Mercantile seven-a-side Tournament, played for Mahindananda Aluthgamage Challenge Trophy last week. Led by Falul Rhuman, the composite insurer beat Sri Lankan Airlines 2:1 and Colombo Dockyard 4:1 in the group stage to qualify for the finals. The final was played against LB Finance. Amãna Takaful clinched victory in a nail biting penalty shootout. At full time the match ended with both sides tied at 2:2. Amãna Takaful beat LB Finance in the penalty shootout scoring 3 goals to LB Finance’s 2. This year’s tournament was conducted in the Jayathilaka Stadium, Nawalapitiya on 29 June 2013. “This is a great win. We have been regular participants and winners in some Mercantile football tournaments in the past. To win in my first year as captain is exciting. The Team is proud and honoured to bring the trophy home and wish to thank the company for the continuous support and encouragement given to sports and specially football,” said Falul Rhuman, Captain of the Amãna Takaful Soccer Team. The winning team from Takaful consisted of Falul Rhuman (capt.), Sanoj Sameera Perera, A.A. Fazulur Rahuman, M.N.M. Fazal, M. Shifan, Ahamed Fazal. Delan Kowsaliya De Silva, Mohamed Rizni, Rizvan Halaldeen, F.M. Nazrullah, Mohamed Muhard and Jawfer Sadiq led to the teams victory. Adding more colour to the win, National Poolist & Under 23 National player M.N.M. Fazal was awarded as the ‘Most Valuable Player of the Tournament’ while Jawfer Sadiq was awarded ‘Best Goal Keeper of the Tournament’.   “The Most Valuable player of the Tournament is not an individual achievement but a team effort. I am happy that I was able to contribute to the team’s success in this tournament,” said M.N.M. Fazal commenting on his achievement.  In the run up to the finals, Amãna Takaful recorded impressive wins against Dialog Axiata and Sri Lankan Airlines by beating them 3:0 in the quarter-finals and 4:0 in the semi-finals respectively.
