Bharti Airtel Lanka, a leading telecommunication in Sri Lanka, announced its appointment as principal sponsor of the decennial LC-MC Regatta 2013. In addition, Airtel Lanka will also scull Musaeus College rowing for the next three years. The company will bear all costs of organising the regatta. The Regatta which is the annual rowing competition between Ladies’ College Colombo and Musaeus College, Colombo, commenced in the year 2004 and is currently considered the oldest and the most prestigious inter-school rowing  competition held amongst the girl’s schools in Sri Lanka. Out of the races rowed so far, Musaeus has won two while Ladies have won six with one race ending in a draw. The races are rowed over a distance of 1000 yards and the venue is the Beira Lake in Colombo. This event takes place in the month of October and is usually held on the second Saturday of the month at the Colombo Rowing Club. Commenting about the sponsorship, Bharti Airtel Lanka CEO/MD Suren Goonewardene said, “As an organisation, Airtel Lanka is always looking for new ways of being relevant to our target group – creating life enriching moments and thereby enriching their lives. We believe that sports provide the ideal platform to achieve this. We are indeed very pleased to partner the Tenth Annual LC - MC Regatta, one of the most sought after schools rowing tournament in the country. For Airtel, this is an important occasion as we extend our support for the very first time to an all-girl’s sporting tournament – reiterating the fact that equal opportunities should be created based on mere talent. We also strongly believe in sports development as it plays a key role in the development of future leaders and role models thus creating a progressive community in Sri Lanka.” “We are very happy and grateful to have Airtel Lanka as the Principal sponsor for the LC-MC regatta, which is one of the most prestigious sporting events in the schools calendar,” stated Musaeus College, Colombo Principal S. Dandeniya. “This is the very first time that Airtel Lanka has partnered with Musaeus College and we look forward to a close involvement with them which will certainly take our sports to the next level.” “It is now a full decade since the inception of the only inter-girls’ school regatta in the country. The bonds of friendship which have been established between these two leading private schools has grown through the years,” stated Ladies’ College, Colombo Principal Nirmalie Wickremesinghe. I hope that this will continue in the future and look forward to yet another exciting Regatta this year,” she further added. Airtel Lanka made its foray into the field of sports sponsorships in the year 2012 through its associations with Manchester United and Football, Rugby, Tennis, Golf, Rowing and Basketball. The company has been involved in the development of sports, as evidenced by its various sponsorships at school level, district level and island wide. While Airtel Lanka continues to be involved beyond just a mere investment with all its sports sponsorships stakeholders, it is committed to developing local talent to international standards, thus fostering school sports to new heights as well as contributing actively towards the positive development of youth in Sri Lanka.
