Sri Lankan weightlifter Chathuranga Lakmal won the bronze medal in the 56kg men’sevent at the ongoing 21st Commonwealth Gamesbeing held in the Gold Coast of Australia.
The victory is Sri Lanka’s first medal at these Commonwealth Games. Malaysian lifter Muhammad Azory won the gold medal while Indian Guraja accounted for the silver.
Sri Lankan weightlifter Dinusha Hansani Gomez won the bronze medal at the Games, lifting a total weight of 155 kg yesterday.
Chanu Saikhom from India won the gold medal and Marie Hanitra Roilya won the silver. They lifted a total weight of 196 kg and 170 kg respectively.
The Sri Lankan badminton outfit were thrashed by a strong Indian team 5-0 yesterday.
Sri Lanka’s skipper Niluka Karunaratne lost 21-16, 21-10 while Madushika Dilrukshi lost to Sania Nehwal 21-8, 21-4.
In the men’s doubles, Dinuka Karunaratne and Buwaneka Goonethilleka lost to Satwick Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty 21-17, 21-14.
Although India dropped one game in the Mixed Doubles, they came back strongly to finish off their Sri Lankan opponents 21-15, 19-21, 22-20. India were represented by Pranav Chopra and Ruthvika Gadde while Sachin Dias and Thilini Henahewa represented Sri Lanka.
Ponappa and N. Sikki Reddy beat Thilini Hendahewa and Kavidi Sirimannage in the Women’s Doubles 21-12 and 21-14.
Both Akalanka Peiris and Chirantha De Silva are taking part in the 50-metre butterfly as only 16 swimmers made it to the next round from around 50-plus competitors. In the 100-metre backstroke event Akalanka qualified for the semi-finals.
Sri Lanka’s swimming sensations Vinoli Kaluarachchi and Dilrukshi Perera will take to the waters today in the Gold Coast. They will take part in the 50-metre freestyle event.
