Vidyartha beat St. Peter's after 8 years in schools rugby
Vidyartha, one of the toughest opponents in School League, created the first major shock of the tournament when they beat the much-fancied St. Peter’s College by 11 points (one try, two penalties) to seven points (one try, one conversion) in their Dialog Inter Schools Rugby League 2022 encounter which was worked off at the Nittawela Rugby Stadium last evening under wet conditions.
At the short whistle Vidyartha led 5/0. This defeat by the Bambalapitiya School will put lot of pressure on them in order for the League title this year around.
The game was played under wet conditions and ball handling was very difficult. The lads from Bambalapitiya found it very tough, making a number of handling errors. Vidyartha too made handling errors but it was far less than their opponents.
Whenever the home team got opportunities, they converted them in to points and took the game away from the Peterites. They made full use of the territory advantage, converting them in to points.
Kalana Premaratne, Vidyartha hooker scored the only try for Vidyartha through a forward’s rush. In the second half Vidyartha put over two penalties through full back, Menuka Thilakaratne. For the losers, their only try was scored by Vishwa Silva with Emith Jayaweera adding the extras. Vidyartha is coached by Nalin Wijesinghe with Ananda Kasturiarachchi as their Rugby Director.
The last Vidyartha win against St. Peter’s was at Bambalapitiya in 2012 under Jason Dissanayake.
