Ushan Thiwanka
An old boy of Maris Stella College, Negombo, Ushan Thiwanka has set a new Sri Lanka record in high jump, clearing a height of 2.28m at the Texas Relays Championships, USA on Saturday.
Thiwanka broke the longstanding record of 2.27m held by Manjula Kumara Wijesekara, set in 2004 and equalled in 2005.
Thiwanka impressed in 2016 with a leap of 2.17m as an 18-year-old. Later in 2018, he cleared a height of 2.24m, becoming Sri Lanka’s no.1 high jumper, and was shortlisted for the Asian Games.
