Table leaders Army SC A suffered their first defeat in the ongoing SLC Women’s Division I Cricket Tournament when they lost to Air Force SC A by five runs in a thrilling match played at Panagoda yesterday.
Put into bat first, Air Force SC A were dismissed for a moderate 127. For Army SC A, who had won all their five matches played before yesterday, it looked like a walk in the park getting those runs but Sri Lanka Women’s off-spinner Inoshi Priyadharshani had other ideas, picking up a career one-day best 4/18 as the dominant Army SC A struggled throughout their innings and eventually were bowled out for 122 with only captain Nilakshi de Silva playing a lone hand, scoring 57 off 110 balls.
It was not a good day for the soldiers, as Army SC B also ended on the losing side when Navy SC beat them by nine wickets. Veteran Sri Lanka Women all-rounder Shashikala Siriwardene combined with another off-spinner Madhuri Samuddika to plot the downfall of Army SC B, taking seven wickets between them to get them out for 71. Navy SC A knocked the runs off, losing only one wicket in the process, to go on top of the league standings with six wins out of six, displacing Army SC A.
Skipper Kavisha Dilhara hit a determined 65 off 96 balls and right-arm medium-pacer Kavya Kavindi took four wickets to give Seenigama CC their first win of the tournament when they beat Air Force SC B by 79 runs. The off-breaks of Dewmi Vihanga (4/25) ensured Chilaw Marians CC a 24-run win over Colts CC, despite a valiant knock of 62 off 113 balls from Amadhi Wijesingha.
