Sri Lankasports.com, Sri Lanka’s first-ever sports website, intends launching an international sports film competition to celebrate its 20th anniversary. This will also followed by Sri Lankasports.com International Short Sports Film Festival.
Sri Lankasports.com wants to promote the values of sport like respect for rules, fair play, overcoming limits, team play through the best films all over the world that are focused on sports. The goal is to promote the best quality in sports films; to stimulate, the interest in sport and cinema, fostering didactic-cultural meetings in different ways and in different productive forms, contribute to the development of artistic and cultural trends of the local and world cinema in the theme of sports.
This competition will narrow the gap of Sri Lankan film makers who are not into making sports films and also will provide a platform for local talent to try out their skills and capabilities in new themes like sports. In addition this will be a another opportunity to attract international film makers to Sri Lanka and anchoring Sri Lanka as the hub for international sporting events and luring tourists. These events will attract a vast number of tourists, they will also broaden the horizon for local sports enthusiasts.
The competition will be open to local and international film makers and there will be three categories to show case the short sports films. There will be a category for Sri Lankan film makers only and they will have the opportunity to compete in other two categories, the South Asian and international categories as well.
Best Short Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Picture ,Best Editor ,Best Soundtrack, Best Documentary, Best Fiction are some of the awards lined up for each category.
Sri Lankasports.com has a successful history of organising unique and innovative sporting events in Sri Lanka.
They launched Sri Lankasports.com Netball Challenge, Intercompany Netball Championship in 2006 and held it for 10 consecutive years. The Sri Lankasports.com Intercompany Netball Championship has introduced a seven-a-side rugby format (play for Cup, Plate, Bowl and Shield in a 7-1-7 minute match duration) to the game of netball in Sri Lanka during the inaugural championship in 2006
The introduction of the ‘power play’ concept to the game of netball in Sri Lanka and to the world was done by Sri Lankasports.com. In 2013, Sri Lankasports.com launched another netball tournament for the banking sector in Sri Lanka which also booked a place in history by being the first netball event in Sri Lanka to be covered live on television.
It has organised Sri Lanka’s first Under-19 school Futsal event, the Sri Lankasports.com Futsal Challenge, under the auspices of the Football Federation of Sri Lanka and The Sri Lanka Schools’ Football Association, for two consecutive years.
Sri Lankasports.com is also responsible for organising Sri Lanka’s first day-night inter-club beach football tournament. They also created history by organising the first Under-15 Inter-School Handball Championship in Sri Lanka in 2012.
