The Sri Lanka Sevens led by Sudharshana Muthuthanthri left the island this morning for the Borneo Rugby Sevens 2018 which will be worked off in Malaysia from16-18 March.
Sri Lanka will send both their men’s and women’s outfit to this event. The men’s team were placed sixth while the women’s did remarkably well to win the Cup Championship in 2017.
Former Isipathana and Navy player Adeesha Weeratunge and Wesley College and Havelocks player Sithum Peiris too will wear their maiden Sri Lanka Sevens jersey at this event. This will be the first Sevens outing for the national Sevens players who will also take part in the Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast of Australia next month before participating in the Asian Games in Indonesia.
Upon the conclusion of these events, the Asian Sevens 2018 will be once again take place in Hong Kong, South Korea and Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is also likely to tour France before the Asian Sevens event in Hong Kong as part of their preparations.
Peter Woods will be the Head Coach of the men’s outfit while Sudath Sampath will be in charge of the women’s team. Former Trinity Winger Inthi Marikar will be the High Performance Rugby Director.
