Sri Lanka’s popular breakfast brand ‘Samaposha’ powered the annual Provincial School Games for the 4th consecutive year at the Anuradhapura Public Stadium in partnership with the provincial education department.
The annual Games aims to uplift the standards of school athletes to reach the national level and the 1st sports meet was held at the North Central province with a series of separate sports meets to will be held in the North Western, Eastern and Uva provinces.
The meets will host a total of over 70 events with over 450 schools participating from all four provinces providing 2200 sportsmen and women the opportunity to showcase their remarkable athletic talents.
Anuradhapura Central College emerged as the overall champion in the North Central Provincial games, which concluded first.
Royal Central College won the overall boys' sub-championship and Thambuttegama Central College won the overall girls' sub-championship. D.M.M. Lahiru Bandara of Hurulumeegaha Pitiya Vidyalaya, Anuradhapura won the award for the most talented athlete in the boys category for his performance in the under-12 long jump category with a record of 4.33 meters. In the same event, S.P. Pahandi of Thambuttegama Central College won the award for the most talented athlete in the girls division with a record of 4.26 meters.
U.G.P. Sankalpana of Vijitha Central College, Polonnaruwa was awarded the most talented athlete in the under-14 boys javelin throw, while W.M.K.G.S. Madhushani of Bakamoona National School, Hingurakgoda was awarded the most talented athlete in the long jump event with a record performance of 4.52m under the girls category.
The best overall athletes in the javelin throw and long jump events under the age of 16 were respectively awarded to M. Udantha Jayasinghe of Anuradhapura Central College and W.M.V. Ganeshika Wickramasinghe of Anuradhapura Siddhartha Maha Vidyalaya.
Udantha’s javelin throw was recorded at 15.20m and Ganeshika's long jump was recorded at 4.72m.The most talented athlete for the under-18 long jump event was awarded to W.M. Shivantha of Dimbulagala Aselapura Maha Vidyalaya while Chamatka Sathsarani of Anuradhapura Central College won the award for the best athlete in the girls category. Their performances were 6.27m and 4.89m respectively.
K.M.K. Chatumina Karunaratne of Polonnaruwa Galamuna Maha Vidyalaya was awarded the most talented athlete in the under-20 boys category in the long jump event with a performance record of 7.19 meters. S.P.L. Nimeshika Chandrasena of Anuradhapura Central College won the award as the best athlete in the girls division with a performance of 4.80 meters.
