Sri Lankan Sim Racers, Fawzal Aleem and Trevor DeMello
Sri Lankan Sim Racers, Fawzal “ZeeNic” Aleem and Trevor “Mellow” DeMello will be racing at the Monaco SimRacing World Cup from the 27 to 29 July as they attempt to put up the best lap times on the chosen virtual tracks.
The Monaco SimRacing WorldCup is organised by the Monaco Esports Federation in association with the International Esports Federation (IESF). The tournament will feature one of the most popular Sim racing game titles in the world, Assetto Corsa.
The Sri Lanka Esports Association, as a long-standing member of the IESF, organised national qualifiers for the event calling out all Sim Racers in the country to register. As a result, Muhammad Fawzul Aleem Abul Hassan, better known by his gaming name of “ZeeNic” and Akash Trevor DeMello, known by his gaming name of “Mellow”, came out ahead of their opponents with ZeeNic clocking in a best lap time of 1.32.14 closely followed by Mellow with a best lap time of 1.32.25.
The two sim racers have now earned the qualification to represent Sri Lanka at the online qualifiers which will be held in August where those who manage to enter the top 12 will earn an entry directly to fly to Monaco to take part at the Grand Finals on the 23 October.
Sim racing, short for simulated racing, is the concept of virtual races taking place in a simulated environment through gaming software. Sim racing aims to simulate the real-world environment as closely as possible where the skills between virtual and reality blend into a seamless experience. Many real-world motorsport teams use Sim racing to train their drivers before they physically drive on the real tracks.
“Sim racing is something we have seen grow rapidly in the past few years in Sri Lanka with the community rallying around us with more tournaments and events being held. It is a great opportunity for anyone to experience racing in a simulated environment. We are excited to see two promising young sim racers represent Sri Lanka at the Sim Racing World Cup and we wish them well,” said Sri Lanka Esports Association President Raveen Wijayatilake.
