The Sri Lanka Junior Open Golf Championship is set to tee off today at the Royal Colombo Golf Club. This is the 13th year Prima Sunrise has committed to sponsoring the most prestigious event in the junior golf calendar, the Sri Lanka Junior Open. For the first time, the event is recognised for the World Amateurs of Golf Rankings (WAGR). The tee positions and the course are laid up for the players in keeping with WAGR requirements. The tournament will be played over three days with the prizegiving scheduled for 17 December at 3:30 p.m.
The winner of the Sri Lanka Junior Open will be crowned the National Junior Champion in both boys’ and girls’ categories. This event will once again be conducted according to four age group categories as follows: 15-18 years (Gold Division), 12-14 years (Silver Division), 10-11 years (Bronze Division), and 9 years and under (Copper Division).
Haroon Aslam, Nirekh Tejwani, Yannik Kumara, and Reshan Algama are to pose stiff competition for the boys’ national title. The girls’ title will be open for grabs with last year’s winner Taniya Balasuriya being overage. However, Balasuriya’s younger sister Sherrin will vie for top honours, with Devinka Kanagisvaran and Kaya Daluwatta.
In the more junior categories, K. Danushan, Shanal Binuksha, Keshav Algama, Thejas Kanth, and Kavahn Tejwani are seen as the emerging talent in the Bronze and Copper categories.
