Singer Schools Rugby League 2018 will kick off today (12March) in Kandy when Katugastota Antonians host their traditional rivals Trinity College in their very first game for both outfits.
Antonians will be led by Kavinda Amarakoon with some outstanding players in their outfit. Mohamed Shabeer, who made his mark last year, is one of them: the lanky second rower is one of the best in schools this season. Theeksha Gunasinghe too will be a vital player for the Eagles. Trinity will be led by Avishka Sheik who will have Naveen Rajaratnam, Sakalasooriya, Warren Weerakoon, Rishan Bandaranayake and Lenox Calyanaratne in their line-up. Antonians are strong with their forwards while the Lions hold a speedy three quarter line.
Antonians are coached by their old boy and 1986 scrum half, Sanjaya Amunugama, while Trinity is coached by New Zealander, Lote Raikabula.
Antonians last won the League in 2001 under Tikiri Dissanayake while Trinity won under Tyrelle Rajapakse in 1987.

Isipathana had a nervous start for their rugby season opener when they edged out their traditional rivals Thurstan 25/24 in a tensed thriller.
The winners were leading 17-12 at half time.
For Isipathana team the four tries were scored by Ravin Anjula, Nadeesha Chaminda, Ramitha Himash and skipper Manelka Ruberu scored while converted one of them and put over a penalty.
For Thurstan four tries were scored by Hasindu Dinesh, Vishal Wijewardena and Joel Sameera scored the tries with Hasindu Dinesh put over two conversions. In another encounter, Peterites opened their rugby season with a magnificent 48/12 win over Zahira at Havelock Park.
At the short breather Peterites led 34/0.
