Former sprint champion Shehan Ambepitiya announced his retirement at the 97th National Championships 2019. A former Janadipathi Rajagiriya student and later Gateway student, he stood out for his schools.
He started his career at the age of 16 years. He was the fastest in the 2007 Junior Athlete in South Asia clocking a timing of 21.52 seconds. He won Gold medals at the New Delhi Youth Commonwealth Games in 2008.
